For mother iron is essential as during the pregnancy maternal blood will be diluted (blood volume expands) and if your iron demands are not met, mother will develops iron deficiency anemia (a condition where lack of red blood cells manifest by easy fatigability, dizziness, prone to infection). During fetal life iron is vital especially during 7-8 weeks of pregnancy onwards where the bone marrow starts to actively produce red blood cells and this is when oxygen. When the pregnancy reach term (37-42 weeks of pregnancy) mother should remember that she will deliver the baby soon and she will lose average of 250-500mL of blood. When this occurred, it will be major problem for the mother if she has underlying anemia (lack of red blood cells) and it is one of leading cause of maternal death during pregnancy. A slice of cheese pizza, for example, would count toward servings in the grain (crust), vegetable (tomato sauce) and dairy (cheese) groups.

What if I am vegetarian?

For a vegetarian, aim for non-dairy source available for each nutrient requirement based on food pyramid (above). If you’re a vegetarian, you can continue to follow your diet during pregnancy and have a healthy baby. But you’ll need to plan and review your food intake. Eating variety of food is the key to maintain adequate nutrients intake per day. Usually vegetarians are having problem to consume enough zinc, vitamin B-12, iron, calcium and folic acid. To overcome these problems, try to practice this tips:
Eat at least four servings of calcium-rich foods each day. Nondairy sources include broccoli, kale, dried beans, and calcium-fortified juices, cereals and soy products.
Add more energy-rich foods to your diet. This is particularly important if you’re having trouble gaining enough weight. Good sources include nuts, nut butters, seeds and dried fruit.
Seek advice on supplements. Many vegetarians need a vitamin B-12 supplement. A prenatal vitamin that supplements other nutritional needs. Consult your healthcare provider for further details.

What food to avoid during pregnancy?
Undercooked poultry and ground meat – raw undercooked poultry and ground meat is a source of bacterial which are responsible for food poisoning. Salmonella and listeria particularly dangerous bacterium during pregnancy. Expecting moms get very anxious the moment that they start to feel a possible pregnancy. Once they miss their period, they get very excited and curious whether they are pregnant or not. And thus, they would head off to the nearest pharmacy or convenient store to purchase a home pregnancy kit. An early pregnancy test may help you confirm whether you are pregnant or not. But is an early pregnancy test accurate? When should you take your first pregnancy test?

Whether or not you are expecting, you want an instant confirmation to put closure to your hopes or paranoia. But when is the perfect time to take the test?  First and foremost, note that the earliest moment to take a test is not really established and general because women’s systems behave differently from one another. Home pregnancy tests work by detecting the presence and the level of hCG which is a hormone evident during pregnancy. This hormone appears in the urine and is produced by the placenta after a fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus wall. This phenomenon is said to occur at least 6 days after ovulation. This simply entails that taking a home pregnancy test before the sixth day will only give you an inaccurate result.

Given this, we can conclude that, pregnancy tests administered through pregnancy kits will not give you an accurate result especially if used prior to the 6th day after ovulation. Note; however, that since our bodies function differently, this may not necessarily apply to all women. Some women may still get an accurate result despite taking the test within the first six days after ovulation. If you really want to get rid of false alarms, it is advised that you go to your doctor instead of administering a home pregnancy test by yourself. Once you start feeling some early signs of pregnancy, your doctor will conduct a pregnancy test using your blood as specimen. Blood pregnancy test is more accurate than a urine pregnancy test and can detect pregnancy as early as the second week of conception.

Nevertheless, if you still want to go on with your home pregnancy test, wait until your period is due. Most doctors and even pregnancy kit manufacturers recommend that women take their first pregnancy test by the time that their period is expected. Somehow, this can give you a more accurate result. If you’re not yet satisfied with the outcome of your pregnancy kits, you can see your doctor for the blood test as a second confirmation. The entire home pregnancy test process is very simple but be sure as well to read the instructions indicated in your kits. Pregnancy kits have different indicators of positive pregnancy. Some use lines. Others use a plus. Using your first urine early in the morning as specimen is also recommended. The first urine contains a large amount of hormones which can help detect pregnancy.

Whether or not you’ve been trying to have a baby, the “feeling” pregnant blues always bring in dilemma so get your confirmation by conducting your first pregnancy test.

Do you know what the very early signs of pregnancy are? Your body is a complex machine – finely tuned and is giving off signals all the time. Pregnancy is a huge change to your body’s normal day-to-day functions and when you are with baby, your body will let you know!

Some moms-to-be will get one or two quiet signs at first, others’ bodies will scream “I’M PREGNANT” with all 10 signs at once. As hormone levels fluctuate and your body learns how to react to these changed levels, most women will experience practically all of the very early signs of pregnancy. You just need to know what the signs are.

Elevated Basal Body Temperature
A woman’s basal body temperature (the lowest body temperature attained during rest) begins to elevate after ovulation, and stays elevated past when you should have had your period. This increase in basal body temperature, usually one-half to one degree Fahrenheit, is a subtle very early warning sign of pregnancy. To get this clue, you should have some idea what your normal (non-pregnancy)  basal temperature is.

Tenderness In The Breasts And Nipples
This is a classic early sign of early pregnancy – and one that often goes unnoticed. Many women attribute this tenderness to their bras or other clothing, and tend to ignore it. And, after the body gets used to the new hormone levels – the tenderness goes away. So, you must pay close attention to what your body is trying to say – because it may stop talking after a while.

Darker, More Prominent Areolas
As your breasts change and enlarge, your areolas (the darker area that surrounds the nipple) will swell and get bigger, too. This is a very early sign of pregnancy – normally occurring around the time you expect your period. Some believe that the darker coloring of the areola helps the newborn find the nipple for breastfeeding. After pregnancy, your nipples and areolas should return to normal colors and sizes.

Constipation
This is another very subtle clue – who doesn’t get constipated at one time or another – without being pregnant?

The changing hormone levels can play games with your bowels, interrupting the normal frequency and timing of your bowel movements. Many women who are expecting just write constipation off as an unrelated issue. Like basal body temperature, paying close attention really can make a difference.

Spotting
Light to moderate spotting (commonly called implantation spotting) normally happens a week to several days before your normal  period is supposed to happen. Pink or brownish spotting is common a week or so after ovulation. Sometimes, spotting can simply be a sign of an early period.  If this happens, look for other signs of pregnancy or take a pregnancy test.

Frequent Urination
Another classic very early sign of pregnancy, frequent urination should be a standout. This can be one of the earliest clues – happening  a week to 12 days after a rise in basal body temperature, or about six weeks into your first trimester. While rising hormone levels are partly to blame, the most likely reason you feel like you have to pee every 5 minutes or so is the fact that the amount of blood in your body increases dramatically during pregnancy. This leads to a lot of extra fluids flowing through your kidneys – therefore a lot more pee!

Nausea And Vomiting
Commonly referred to as “morning sickness,” this early sign of pregnancy usually affects most women and begins around the sixth week of pregnancy. Again, hormone levels are thought to be the main cause. Surprisingly, many doctors feel that morning sickness is a good sign that all is well with your baby’s health and development. If your morning sickness is accompanied with vomiting, be sure to stay hydrated.

Menstrual Period Missed
While there are many reasons you may miss a menstrual period – stress, illness, excessive exercise, reactions to foods or medications – this can be a classic sign of pregnancy. If your period is very regular, and you have no other obvious reason to miss one, look for other early signs you may be pregnant.

Cramping
Moderate to severe cramping can be a sign of many conditions – including pregnancy.Implantation cramping happens to a growing and moving uterus getting prepared to sustain a new life. Sometimes cramping can be a sign of constipation or gas in the bowels. Other more serious causes include  miscarriage= or ectopic pregnancy.

You shouldn’t have cramping after a positive pregnancy test – if you experience cramps with mild spotting, see your doctor to be sure all is well.

Unusual Fatigue And Tiredness
In our rush-rush modern world, it’s not unusual to be dead tired at the end of a busy day. Fatigue is different – a feeling of lethargy and exhaustion that seems to happen no matter your level of activity or time of day. The truth is, your body is working very hard to accommodate a new life. And, this work takes energy – energy that is taken from your daily activities.

If you notice some of these very early signs of pregnancy, test yourself with a good quality pregnancy test you can get at your local drug store. These home pregnancy tests have become quite accurate, normally being able to sense a pregnancy 10 to 14 days after contraception. If you get a negative, but still feel you may be pregnant – see your doctor to be sure.

Pregnancy tests – whether home tests or blood tests – measure hcg levels in early pregnancy. Pregnancy tests will show a positive result if hcg is detected. Hcg stands for “human chorionic gonadotropin”, which is measured in milli-international units per milliliter (mIU/ml).

When is Hcg Detected?

Hcg levels in early pregnancy can be detected approximately 11 days after conception by a blood test, and about 12-14 days after conception by a home pregnancy test, or urine test. In general, the hcg levels in early pregnancy should double every 48 hours in early pregnancy to indicate a viable pregnancy. This rate will increase to every 96 hours after a few weeks.

This doubling rate will eventually slow down as the pregnancy progresses. It peaks arounds 8-11 weeks, and then slows down and levels off for the rest of the pregnancy. After about 12 weeks of pregnancy, the placenta takes over in nourishing the baby.

If the hcg level is less than 5mIU/ml, a negative pregnancy test will result. A positive result will show with anything above 25mIU/ml.

The Rate of Increase Is What Counts For A Healthy Pregnancy!

Try not to read too much into the exact hcg numbers – it’s the rate at which these numbers double that is important. Sometimes a completely healthy pregnancy will have low hcg levels in early pregnancy. An ultrasound is much more accurate than using exact hcg numbers.

To get a general idea of the level of hcg at various stages in early pregnancy, follow this chart:

3 weeks: 5 – 50 mIU/ml

4 weeks: 5 – 426 mIU/ml

5 weeks: 18 – 7,340 mIU/ml

6 weeks: 1,080 – 56,500 mIU/ml

7 – 8 weeks: 7, 650 – 229,000 mIU/ml

9 – 12 weeks: 25,700 – 288,000 mIU/ml

13 – 16 weeks: 13,300 – 254,000 mIU/ml

17 – 24 weeks: 4,060 – 165,400 mIU/ml

25 – 40 weeks: 3,640 – 117,000 mIU/ml

Non-pregnant females: <5.0 mIU/ml

Postmenopausal females: <9.5 mIU/ml

As you can see, the levels of hcg in early pregnancy vary quite a bit. The change in values of the numbers is more important than the actual numbers themselves.

A quantitative hcg test (done with a blood test) measures the amount of hcg in the blood. To see if these numbers are doubling at a proper rate, your doctor will give you 2 blood tests 48 hours apart if he or she is concerned that your pregnancy is at risk.

A qualitative hcg test (urine home pregnancy test) simply detects if hcg is present in the blood.

If low levels of hcg are detected, or if the doubling rate is too far apart, this could be a sign of miscarriage, or blighted ovum (in which the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall, but the embryo does not develop). This could also be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy (when the fertilized egg attaches in a place other than inside the uterus – usually a fallopian tube).

If the levels of hcg is unusually high, this could be a sign of a molar pregnancy, which is the result of a genetic error during fertilization. This would then lead to a growth of abnormal tissue in the uterus. Molar pregnancies rarely produce a developing embryo.

High levels could also be a sign of a multiple pregnancy.

Hcg After Miscarriage or Childbirth

Hcg levels after miscarriage should slowly go down, and return to a non-pregnant state. This usually takes about 4-6 weeks after a miscarriage or delivery of a healthy baby. This varies according to the situation – miscarriage, D&C or delivery of a healthy baby. This also depends on how high the levels were at the time. The further along the pregnancy was, the longer it will take for levels to go back to non-pregnancy level (<5.0mIU/ml ).

Complication during pregnancy is more common than most people think. Even for those who are healthy and have had children before, early pregnancy complications could arise, at no fault to anyone. This article explains some of these complications and what to watch out for.

Early pregnancy complications

When you find you are pregnant, the first thing you must do is go see your obstetrician/gynecologist. They will perform an ultrasound to make sure that your pregnancy is advancing as it should. Regular visits to your OBGYN will prevent early pregnancy complications or at the very least, help identify them at an early stage. The two most common pregnancy complications are:

Ectopic pregnancies

Ectopic pregnancies are one of the most common early complications. Ectopic pregnancies refer to pregnancies in which the egg is fertilized outside the womb so the fetus begins to develop in the ovary or in the fallopian tube. This can be very dangerous not only for the fetus but also for the mother. If surgery is not performed, the tubes could burst and result in internal bleeding and in some cases, even death.

Miscarriages

Complication during pregnancy can lead to miscarriages, another common early pregnancy complication. Sometimes the cervix can open causing heavy bleeding with intense cramping pains. Other times, the baby can die in early pregnancy. When this happens, the mother can either wait for a miscarriage to occur or have a D&C. There are many different complications during pregnancy that can cause this to happen: blood clotting, infection, structural problems, or lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol or high caffeine intake.

High risk pregnancy

A pregnancy that is categorized as high risk is one which has a higher chance of complications arising. You may be considered high risk if you are carrying multiple babies, have a long term illness such as diabetes, or are over the age of 35. If you are high risk, you may be asked to visit your obstetrician more regularly as the pregnancy will need to be more closely monitored than usual.

Pregnancy over 35

It is not uncommon for a woman’s fertility to be affected over the age of 30 and once you are pregnant, you must be aware that it is more common for complications to arise. The chances of your child bearing birth defects are significantly higher than those women who are under 30 and miscarriages also become more common in the first trimester of older pregnant women. For those over 35, there will also be an increased risk of diabetes and high blood pressure. Don’t worry, as with today’s technology, almost all these complications can be treated as long as they are spotted early on.

Multiple pregnancies

A multiple pregnancy is one in which there are two or more fetuses. It’s considered to be high risk because with more than one fetus, it has a higher chance of developing complications. Almost half of twins that are born are premature with extremely low birth weights and underdeveloped organs. This makes them very vulnerable and it is not uncommon for only one twin to survive. Twins who share a placenta could result in high amounts of amniotic fluids.

It is important to keep this information regarding early pregnancy complications in mind during pregnancy and to regularly consult your doctor.

Molar pregnancies are a rare complication, classified as a type of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) caused by chromosomal abnormalities during conception in the fertilized egg, which leads to overgrowth of pregnancy tissue.

Molar pregnancies are of two types – complete and partial. Complete molar pregnancies occur when the sperm fertilizes an empty egg due to which no baby is formed. The woman assumes she is pregnant because the placenta grows and produces the pregnancy hormone, called HCG. An ultrasound will reveal that there is no baby, only placenta.

Though a partial molar pregnancy is likely to develop into a fetus, the abnormal placenta cannot sustain a pregnancy. The embryo does not develop at all or develops incompletely. A cluster of grape-like cysts grows in the uterus.

Women, who have had a previous molar pregnancy and those over 40, are at increased risks of encountering a molar pregnancy. Sometimes it can even occur after ectopic pregnancies or a normal pregnancy. Women from Southeast Asia, Mexico and the Philippines have higher rates of molar pregnancy than white US women. White women in the US are at higher risk than black women.

Why molar pregnancy can be a cause for concern

In about 20% of women who have had complete molar pregnancies there is the likelihood of two serious problems arising: an invasive mole or choriocarcinoma. Invasive moles are more common. Choriocarcinoma is a type of cancer that can develop at the placenta site and spread to the body. Though this cancer is a serious condition, it is almost always treatable with chemotherapy. Only 2 to 4% cases of partial molar pregnancies will develop either condition.

Symptoms and diagnosis of molar pregnancy

Bleeding, severe nausea and vomiting are some of the indications of a possible molar pregnancy. A blood test to measure levels of HCG confirms the diagnosis. However partial molar pregnancies can sometimes be more difficult to diagnose. In the event of a miscarriage of a suspected molar pregnancy, a pathologist may confirm the condition on examining the miscarried tissue.

Most of the time a molar pregnancy ends spontaneously when a grape like tissue is discharged. It is also possible to diagnose a molar pregnancy with the help of ultrasound which will reveal an abnormal placenta that appears like a bunch of grapes. When a molar pregnancy is detected by ultrasound, doctors usually recommend a D & C or medication in order to reduce risk of further complications. A small percentage of cases require additional treatment in the form of chemotherapy.

Treatment and follow-up

It is crucial for women who have had a molar pregnancy to be in constant touch with her doctor to monitor the situation since there is a likelihood of molar pregnancies recurring. A minimum of six months of regular follow-ups is recommended and doctors recommend waiting for a year before trying for another pregnancy to make sure that the uterus is free of molar tissue.

A molar pregnancy can be a trying, upsetting experience. Grief about losing a baby, combined with fear of cancer and other health complications is very unsettling. It is here that counseling can effectively tackle feelings of grief and loss.

The cure rate of molar pregnancy is usually very good with vast majority of couples going on to have healthy babies. Chemotherapy also usually does not impact fertility.
