Epidemiologic studies among specific populations have helped to define the risk for gallstone disease among persons losing weight. During follow-up of the Nurses Health Study cohort, the incidence of clinically recognized gallstones was determined after collection of self-reported heights and weights obtained 2 years apart. Compared with women whose weight changed less than 4 kg, women who lost 4 to 10 kg had a 44% increase in the risk for gallstone disease with the weight loss, and women who lost more than 10 kg had a 94% increase in the risk for gallstone disease when controlling for BMI and other risk factors for gallstones. A study in Maastricht, the Netherlands, evaluated the relative contributions of BMI and a history of dieting (yes or no) among 151 men and women who were hospitalized for acutely symptomatic gallstones compared with community controls [29]. Using univariate analysis, a history of dieting doubled the risk for gallstones, but this association largely disappeared with control for the confounding effects of BMI. In an ultrasonographic study of a representative sample from Copenhagen County, Denmark, men with a history of more than one “slimming treatment” (weight loss of more than 5 kg) had a statistically significant doubling of gallstone disease prevalence (11.0% compared with 5.2%). Women had a statistically nonsignificant 79% increase in gallstone disease prevalence with more than one slimming treatment (17.9% compared with 10.2%). Among men, but not women, the association was statistically significant after adjustment for all other risk factors, including highest body mass index ever (a nonsignificant risk factor among men). In the first U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a history of dieting among women (but unknown degree of weight change) was associated with an increase (67%; P = 0.001) in incidence of hospitalization with gallstones during the following 10 years [30]. All of these studies excluded patients with previously undetected gallstones before treatment (about 4% to 8% [32, 33, 35, 36]) and then evaluated all available patients for the development of gallstones after weight loss. If persons on weight reducing diets eat fewer meals and therefore increase overnight fasting periods, they may be at higher risk for development of gallstones. A U.S. population-based study found a doubling of incidence of hospitalization for gallstones among women who fasted overnight for more than 14 hours compared with women who fasted for 8 or fewer hours [30]. Fasting increases gallbladder bile lithogenicity and gallbladder volume [50, 52-55]. No data were presented in these or other studies on the risks for repeated dieting for the development of gallstones. No study has compared the risk for gallstones among weight loss diets differing in caloric content or nutrient composition. It is not known if weight loss due to increased physical activity has any effect on gallstone formation.

Researchers in America say they have developed a more accurate method of predicting if a woman is at risk of heart disease. Current methods to predict heart disease are now over 40 years old and these often failed to identify women who are at risk.

The new Reynolds Risk Score considers more than just traditional risk factors such as age, blood pressure, cholesterol level and smoking. It also considers parental history of heart attack before the age of 60, and levels of C-reactive protein, which has been linked to clogged arteries and damage to blood vessels in the heart. It is hoped that this new method will help to predict the 10-year risk of heart disease.

The researchers, from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, found that the current risk assessment measures failed to spot up to 20% of women who suffered from heart disease, but did not display any of the traditional risk factors. They now hope that their work will lead to more at-risk women being identified and offered drugs, and lifestyle interventions to reduce their risk. When they applied the new system, they found many women rated under the old measures of having a 10-year risk of heart disease of less than 20% had to be reclassified. In some cases the risk was increased, but in others it came down.

Roger Blumenthal from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, welcomed the new assessment system. He said: “Physicians should incorporate these factors into their testing and decision-making about which women are most likely to develop cardiovascular disease and physicians should intervene with lifestyle changes and drug treatment before symptoms start to appear. Our best means of prevention is through early identification of those most at risk.”

Judy O’Sullivan, a cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said that it was not standard practice to take account of C-reactive protein levels during assessment in primary care in the UK.

She said various assessment methods were used in the UK, but none were perfect. The key, she said, was to get women to present themselves for assessment in the first place.

“Many women don’t recognise heart disease as being an issue for them. In women it tends to be an older person’s disease, and quite often women have developed other conditions which can cause pain, such as diabetes, by the time they develop heart problems, so they put any pain down to something else,” she said.

It is the new theme of the times that women today are as prone to heart disease as men. This is a far cry from the mainstream belief a couple of decades ago when only men were susceptible to heart diseases. Furthermore, such belief emphasized that as long as women keep themselves fit, they are likely to avoid heart disease. This belief is very much true because a major reason for the susceptibility of women today is due to changes in lifestyle and diet.

Why Women are Susceptible to Heart Diseases

To help women understand why they may suddenly find themselves at risk of heart diseases, it is important to consider the following factors that can contribute to one’s susceptibility.

1) Heredity. If there is a family history of stroke or heart diseases, the chances are that a woman is likely to develop them.

2) A previous heart attack or stroke. If one is lucky enough to survive a heart attack or stroke, it is no cause for celebration. This is because such attacks can occur again. And when they do, one must be prepared for the worst.

3) Gender. Although stroke and heart attacks are more likely to occur in men as well as attacking men at an earlier age compared to women, women are at a greater danger than men because statistics show that they are more likely to die during the first attack than men.

4) Age. As a woman gets older, the chances of having heart diseases increase as well.

Keeping Heart Diseases at Bay

In order for a woman to have better chances of avoiding heart diseases the following steps should be taken:

1) Make sure to engage in physical activity. Women who have sedentary lifestyles are more prone to heart diseases than those that have active lives. This is because exercise can strengthen the heart muscles and make it more able to withstand heart ailments.

2) Keep your weight down. Obesity is one contributing factor why a woman develops heart disease. This is because in an obese woman, fats surround the heart muscles that can block the arteries.

3) Allow yourself some time for relaxation. This is a must for women who constantly balance work and maternal obligations at home. In such a situation, a woman is very susceptible to stress and pressure. What is needed is a way to vent those pressures through a positive means. An hour of playing with the kids is one common way mothers employ to help lighten their load.

4) Stop smoking and drinking. These are not beneficial to your body. All they do is bring you closer to heart disease.

5) Watch your diet. A woman’s diet is very important foe avoiding heart disease. Avoid oily and fatty foods and instead focus on fresh fruits and vegetables.

Although it may feel like a, menopause is not a disease or disorder – is a natural transition that occurs for all women when they reach a particular age.

Menopause is the time in the “midst of life” when a woman stops having her period. It happens when a healthy woman, the ovaries stop releasing eggs – usually a gradual natural process. Per menopause is the period of gradual changes that lead to natural menopause. It commonly affects the hormones, the body and the sensations of a woman. The process can take months or years.

Production of estrogen in the ovaries during per menopause is delayed. Hormone levels commonly fluctuate, causing changes as they did during adolescence. The changes leading to menopause may seem much more intense than during puberty. The intensity can be affected by a woman’s feelings about aging, including their reactions to social judgments about aging. The time after menopause is called post-menopause. The average age for a woman’s final period is 51, but can occur as late as age 60. Each woman’s experience with menopause is unique. Some women experience very few changes during this time, while others experience a variety of common fluctuations.

Often women and health professionals act as if menopause was a disease; it is certain that this time the woman’s life should be lived more naturally and with less shock.

Menopause means the end of female fertility, neither more nor less, shall not cause disturbances or relational activities that can make a woman healthy and vital.

At this stage, hormonal changes occur that cause a tendency to suffer from hot flashes and sweating, insomnia, anxiety, depression, vaginal dryness, overweight, high cholesterol, skin problems and weak bones, these disorders manifest as variable and need not affect the welfare and women’s health, but are only statistically more frequent predisposition.

The more you know about menopause, the better prepared you will be a smooth transition. Dealing with menopause is best accomplished with a combination of diet, a healthy lifestyle and natural support. Many doctors prescribe therapy hormone replacement (HRT). Before embarking on a treatment plan, it is always advisable to research all options available to you – and find a treatment that works for you.

There natural remedies that support the regulatory mechanisms of body temperature (to treat hot flashes associated with menopause), promotes healthy sleep patterns and encourages balanced mood. Have been used for years in alternative medicine for safely support the female system during the common process of menopause, supporting overall systemic health, without compromising health or risking serious side effects.

Together with a lifestyle and a healthy diet which excludes excess sugar, stimulants, artificial preservatives, dyes and excess alcohol, these natural remedies can make a positive difference in their welfare. While soy has been shown to have a positive effect on balancing hormones, the combination of herbal ingredients supports balanced hormone levels not only in the female body, but also encourages and promotes calm mood healthy sleep patterns.

In this way, and thanks to the resources that nature provides us, the woman of today has the potential to achieve that menopause is the most vital stage of his life and happy.

Copyright (c) 2008 Quick Turn Marketing International, Ltd.

“I rarely encourage clients to sell via one-step, because leads; people who’ve raised their hands can have so much value worked well over time.” – Dan Kennedy.

There’s an absolute wealth of marketing wisdom in Dan’s statement. It’s impossible to do justice to all of it in this short space. So lets get into it and give you some important food for thought…

You’ll decide to either market to a list, or not. And I know that some marketers just don’t want to be bothered with list generation, for a variety of reasons. That’s fine. So if you’re sitting on the fence about it… just understand that you can be walking away from a LOT of money if you don’t have a list.

If you take your business seriously, then you already know the life-time value of your customers. How much revenue the average customer will bring to you over the time they’re doing business with you.

Armed with that knowledge, you’re able to know exactly how much you can spend to acquire new leads. The smartest marketers know how to break-even to build their lists. And they also know how much that new lead will be worth over time.

Notice how Dan worded his statement…

“…so much value worked well over time.”

The key phrase there is, ‘worked well.’ I’ll tell you something. Many businesses flat out do not get it in that area. When their lists either die from attrition, or become unresponsive, it becomes the business kiss of death. And then they wonder what happened.

Simply no excuse for it because it’s SO easy to prevent. You just need to know how to do that.

I’m sure many of you know about the Law of Reciprocity. Simply stated, giving someone something… or doing something for another person, will compel them to feel obligated to do something for you. Of course, that ‘something’ for you is giving you business.

But stop and think about this for a moment…

People online have come to expect the freebie. The free report, white paper, short ebook… whatever, in exchange for contact information and your continued marketing efforts. It has become a standard for doing business online. Unfortunately this expectation has only served to dilute, if not eliminate, the power of reciprocity. And if your freebie is poor, then you can almost forget any compelling feelings to give you something in return. You’ll immediately become bland and boring because you’ll be lumped in that vague group of online businesses that all look the same. Or worse…

People will label you as a scam, or just someone who wants to make a fast buck. But…

All is certainly not lost… IF you provide good quality information. And you can still harness reciprocity’s power in your marketing. How?

By continuing to provide information of high perceived value in your follow-up emails. But do it with a twist and some common sense. Just think about human nature and it’ll become clear.

First… spark intrigue. Create some suspense and the desire for more. One way to do that is by NOT revealing everything. Don’t give the farm away in your free reports and ebooks. Now this isn’t anything new. But I’ll tell you something I’ve seen a lot.

I’ve seen free reports and ebooks that offered lots of good information. But they failed to create any burning desire. There was no sense of intrigue. No sense of, “I gotta know more about this NOW!”

Let me ask you… when you see a newspaper ad selling whatever, and there’s a picture of an attractive woman wearing a bikini… does that picture make you want to buy?

NO! Probably doesn’t. You see that so much people become blind to it… for the most part. It has no selling value. Or, for lots of guys maybe it might catch their attention. They might check out the hot girl and then move on.

You can be regarded as a respectful, professional marketer simply by treating your list with respect. That means NOT bombarding with a constant stream of, “You Gotta Check This Out NOW!” Don’t beat them up with constant, hard selling.

Keep a continuous rapport with them. Talk to them. Give them substance and good information while sparking an intense desire to know more. Share your self with them and they’ll come to think of you as something more than a marketer.

I’ve been marketing to lists for many years. And I’ve had subscribers stay with me for almost as long. It’s a skill you can learn and develop. And done right, with the right backend offers… you’ll take your bottom line to whole new levels.

Alzheimer’s disease or the ‘living death’ was named after Dr Alois Alzheimer who discovered it in 1907, when he described the amazing effects the disease had on the brain of a 51 year old woman who had apparently died of dementia.

When examined under a microscope, her brain showed changes that had never been seen before.

While in some parts there was a clumping of brain matter in other parts it was tangled together.

When his research discovered the same twisting and deformations in other patients who died of similar causes the condition carried his name and became known as Alzheimer’s disease.

However, his research coincidentally concentrated on younger patients so at first this produced a false impression that Alzeimer’s disease only affected the young, with older sufferers being falsely diagnosed with pre-senile dementia or senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT).

Now we know that the reverse is actually true and that Alzheimer’s, with its distinctive brain abnormalities, is much more common in older patients than on the young.

This initial confusion has complicated matters enormously because now the whole group of conditions are all known as Alzheimer’s disease.

The Royal College of Physicians describes Alzheimer’s disease as follows …
“Dementia is the global impairment of higher functions, including memory, the capacity to solve the problems of day to day living, the performance of learned perceptuo-motor skills (our learned responses such as washing, dressing and eating), the correct use of social skills, and the control of emotional reactions in the absence of gross clouding of consciousness.”

This definition can’t possibly convey the complex symptoms and distress that characterise this condition.

Those who personally know and love someone who suffers from it describe the gradual loss of memory, impaired judgement and changes in behaviour and temperament as ‘a living death’.

What Steps Should be Taken for Detection of Occult / Hidden Cases of Congenital Heart Disease CHD? Since there are still a large number of occult/hidden/ asymptomatic cases of CHD, especially of the late cyanotic or acyanotic (in which cyanosis does not occur) group, urgent steps are required to be taken for their early detection. Such cases can be detected in various camps, especially in schools/ colonies, etc. However, in many of the late diagnosed cases, as described earlier, treatment/surgery may not be possible.

It will be appropriate if at the time of birth, a pediatrician examines all the babies for any congenital lesion of the heart, and if suspected, an echocardiography should be carried out so that the disease can be diagnosed right at birth, and necessary steps of treatment can be planned well in time.

It is not difficult diagnosing/ suspecting/ detecting various congenital lesions in the heart, say, in the general population. The physician, besides a detailed clinical examination, is mainly required to auscultate the heart of each child or adult, as the case may be, for heart sounds and murmurs. It gives a fair clue of various congenital lesions of the heart, although all the murmurs of the heart may not be pathological. There are also so-called innocent murmurs. However, once the disease is suspected, the diagnosis can be confirmed by various tests, especially echocardiography.

Even a rare/uncommon heart disease can be diagnosed with fair accuracy on clinical examination of the heart. Hence in various camps that may be proposed to be organized by various voluntary organizations, not much expenditure is likely to be incurred. Routine tests, like ECG and X-rays etc., are required when’ there is at least some clue on auscultation/ Clinical examination about the presence of CHD.

The case of a Chinese woman suffering from a congenital heart disease, rupture of sinus of valsalva, which is not very common, was reported in the British Medical Journal in its issue of 16th March, 1968. The same year, a similar case of an Indian patient was suspected clinically by the author. Advanced tests like echocardiography etc. were not available at that time. The patient was operated at Mumbai by Dr. K.N. Dastur, Honorary Cardiac Surgeon and Honorary Professor of Surgery, Topiwala National Medical College and B.Y.L. Nair Charitable Hospital. Dr. Dastur, confirming the author’s diagnosis, wrote, “The rupture of sinus of valsalva was into the right ventricle as postulated by you.

Hence, a clinical examination/ auscultation of heart will go a long way in detecting the subclinical cases of congenital lesions of the heart. And, therefore, a general realization of this fact is all that is required so that people themselves corne forward for such routine check-ups of their children by their physician, or report in the various camps that may be held from time to time. Unless this is achieved, the desired goal can not be reached. And the people, especially the late cases who are not fit for operation, may go on suffering from the morbidity of the disease, which is chronic in many of the cases.

Venereal disease can be anything from genital warts to herpes and is also commonly known as VD (venereal disease), STD (sexually transmitted disease), and also STI (sexually transmitted infection).

It is also known that most if not all venereal disease problems are contagious. This means that things such as herpes can be passed from one sexual partner to another through vaginal sex, oral sex, or anal sex. More frequently you will also find that a person who has a venereal disease is, or has been, sexually active with more than one partner.

Multiple sexual partners can be a very large part of contracting a venereal disease. Other reasons can include lowered immunity in a person, a deficiency of the immune system due to an illness, the overuse of drugs (such as steroid usage), stress, and poor nutrition and nutritional habits.

Many people are also at risk from a venereal disease who also have a history of STD’s, who begin sexual relations at a very young age, and who use personal items such clothing and towels of the person who is infected with a venereal disease.

It has also been shown that alcohol and cigarette consumption in more than moderate amounts can be detrimental to the health and pave the way for contracting a venereal disease more easily.

Women who are pregnant run the risk of contracting venereal disease more easily than if they were not pregnant. This is due to the fact that the body of a pregnant woman lowers its immunity to accommodate the growing fetus.

Other instances where a person can contract a venereal disease include unprotected sex, sharing of needles and such, and also in some cases, blood transfusions. And these are all only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the various methods in which a person can get a venereal disease.

Treatments for the different venereal disease infections will also vary with each infection, just as the symptoms of the different venereal disease infections also vary. Just to get a feel for the widely differing symptoms and treatments which accompany venereal disease infections, a short list of venereal disease infections have been compiled.

First and foremost is AIDS, then Genital Warts (HPV), Genital Herpes (HSV), Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Scabies. And this is only a short list. There are more than enough venereal disease infections doing the rounds in this day and age of sexual revolution.

And the problem with the venereal disease infections which cropped up over the last 20-30 years is that these are for the most part, resistant to modern medicines. This means that most of these can’t be fully cured.

The symptoms of the venereal disease can be cured but not necessarily the venereal disease itself. At least not the modern ones like genital warts (HPV), genital herpes (HSV), and HIV/AIDS. And that is definitely not a pleasant thought.

Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis are autoimmune diseases in which the body is attacking itself. Septic arthritis is caused by joint infection .

Rheumatoid arthritis is generally worse in the morning and associated with stiffness; in the early stages, patients often have no symptoms after a morning shower. In the aged and children, pain might not be the main feature; the aged patient simply moves less, the infantile patient refuses to use the affected limb.

Treatment with TNFalpha inhibitors results in not only substantial improvements in signs and symptoms of arthritis, but also improvements in all distinct sites of the disease, such as axial arthritis, dactylitis, enthesitis and skin disease.

There is a dearth of published pharmacoeconomic evaluations in the field of PsA. Treatment should be discontinued if a patient develops a serious infection. Do not start HUMIRA in patients with active infection (including chronic or localized).

Treatment is very difficult, and correction of predisposing causes may be useful. We present a 49-year-old woman affected by severe psoriatic arthritis since she was 19, with giant verrucous plaques on her lower limbs that had worsened progressively during the last 15 years.

Treatments such as massage, whirlpools, and cold or hot compresses can help alleviate joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, but they do not protect against bone loss or joint damage. They are designed to provide temporary relief and do not offer sustained pain relief.

Treatment for psoriatic arthritis is meant to control the skin lesions of psoriasis and the joint inflammation of arthritis. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , gold salts, and sulfasalazine are standard arthritis treatments, but have no effect on psoriasis.

It can also affect the spine. But is most usually felt at the knees, ankles, and the joints of the feet. Typically only a few of these joints are inflamed at any one time.

The pain is similar to the rheumatoid variety, except that it is accompanied by the eruption and shedding of skin over large areas of the .

Psoriatic arthritis is a form of inflammatory arthritis that affects 10-30% of the millions of Americans who have the skin condition psoriasis, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. However, steroids are used only when absolutely needed because long-term use may cause serious side effects such as bone deterioration and joint weakness.

This type will often occurs within both males and females over the age of fifty and affects both sexes equally. Psoriasis and the joint disease arthritis often appear separately as the arthritis may precede the psoriasis in the majority of patients.

This type is among the lesser known forms of arthritis. It may not appear so common, but it affects a number reaching to a million.

Psoriatic arthritis may affect a single joint or this can affect several joints in symmetrical manner. This is commonly seen in hand joints in association with psoriasis of the nails.

These types of symptoms may vary. Most people with psoriatic arthritis will never need surgery. But it is a disease that usually appears when psoriasis is already shown so we could say that in most cases the two conditions will both affect the individual at the same time. We can thus notice that most patients will suffer from the associated joint symptoms and skin and nail lesions.

It can cause many other health problems such as lung inflammations and eye disease. People with this diagnosis who experience eye problems should immediately contact their physician since this condition could possibly lead to blindness.

This type is a condition in which a person suffers from the skin disease Proriasis and also has joint inflammation with arthritis symptoms. It is estimated that 10% of people who suffer from Psoriasis also suffer from Psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriatic arthritis can cause joint pain, immobility, and stiffness; dry, red patches (plaques) also form on the skin. Some people also experience problems with their fingernails or eyes.

The popular press does not seem to know how to deal with Alzheimer’s disease. They alternately make light of it by using jokes about “senior moments” and make it out to be a dark, terrible secret that traumatizes everyone who comes in contact with a sufferer.

The term Alzheimer’s disease refers to a condition discovered by Lois Alzheimer, a doctor who practiced in the early 1900s. In 1907 he wrote in medical textbooks about a 51 year old woman who had died of dementia. He examined her brain under the microscope.

His examination revealed changes he had never seen before. In certain parts of the brain, fibres were tangled together, and in other areas he saw clumping of brain matter. As time went on, he discovered more “younger” people who had died of dementia had the same abnormalities in their brains. This condition came to be known as Alzheimer’s disease.

Subsequently, researchers noted that the same type of dementia (with the same symptoms) occurred more frequently in older people. When their brains were examined under a microscope, they demonstrated the same abnormalities.

At that time, only younger people were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease as this was what Dr. Lois Alzheimer had concentrated on. Older people were generally diagnosed with pre-senile dementia or senile dementia of the Alzheimer type.

This differentiation made things unnecessarily complicated, however, and because dementia in younger people is rare, it is now common to refer to the whole group as Alzheimer’s disease.

The term “Alzheimer’s disease” does not clearly convey the complicated set of symptoms that make up this condition. A definition from the Royal College of Physicians describes Alzheimer’s disease as:

“Dementia is the global impairment of higher functions, including memory, the capacity to solve the problems of day to day living, the performance of learned perceptual-motor skills, the correct use of social skills, and the control of emotional reactions in the absence of clouding of consciousness.”

In the vernacular, a common description is “a living death.” A more medical terminology describes it as “the slow onset of memory loss with a gradual progression to a loss of judgement and changes in behaviour and temperament.” And it is the combination of factors that makes it so hard on family members. Any one symptom alone might be easy to handle, but the combination of memory loss with behavioral changes makes it tough. Some Alzheimer’s disease sufferers get angry or belligerent towards family members, and may not recognize even their spouse of 50 years. The complicated nature of the symptoms speaks to the complicated nature of the disease itself, and thousands of researchers around the world are hoping that new research will shed more light on this disabling condition.
