Breast Feeding Complications – 6 Important Guidelines To New Mommies!

Sore nipples

Many mothers do complain as they feel frustrated while feeding and also feel a lot of pains because of their tender nipples. However, most of these mothers do not feel the pain for a long time. Nipples do toughen up quite fast and make breast feeding painless. Breasts may become sore many a times when the babies suck to hard or even if the baby is in the wrong position. Here are some ways that will help mothers.

1. Sore nipples are often caused by wrongly positioned babies
2. As soon as you have finished feeding, let your breasts get some air and do not clothe them.
3. Apply medical grade lanolin which is ultra purified. Do avoid oily products and also petroleum jelly.
4. Do not wash your nipples with soap. Wash them only with water.
5. Many people do find tea bags that are allowed to run under water when cold to produce relief when they are over the nipples.
6. Vary positions so that the same part of the nipple is not compressed always.

Clogging milk ducts

Red tender lumps which are small in size and seen on the breast tissue are known as clogged milk ducts. Infection may arise due to clogging of these ducts. The only way you can ensure there is no clogging is by emptying the breast. Always offer the clogged breast first. The baby will help in emptying it.

The milk which remains even after the feeding process needs to be taken of with a pump or can also be taken off by hand. Never wear a tight bra as this will put more pressure on the ducts.

Breast infection

This is otherwise known as mastititis. This happens mainly due to the breasts being empty and totally out of any milk. The immunity of the mother sometimes comes down due to the germs that gain entrance to the cracks. The symptoms of this are soreness, pain, hard breasts, swelling, heat from the place, redness of the breasts and chills.

To treat this problem you have to take enough of bed rest, pain relievers, and antibiotics and also take in large amounts of fluids. Many mothers do stop feeding when they have some sort of an infection. This is not right at all. When you empty the breasts you help in not letting the milk ducts get clogged.

If you have so much pain that you can not feed, and then use a pump. When you do this let your breasts are in warm water and let hem flow freely. Do not use an electric one if you are planning to make use of it in the bath tub.

Make sure that these sorts of breast infections are well treated and hence the chances of abscess are reduced. Abscess is very painful. Tenderness, swelling and heat are experienced in these areas affected by abscess. Medicines or even a surgery may be required if the infection persists.
