If you’re pregnant or even preparation a pregnancy, you’ve probably found lots of information about sex before pregnancy (that is, having sex in order to imagine) and sex after childbirth (general consensus: expect a less-active sex life when there’s a newborn in the house).

But there’s less talk about the topic of sex during pregnancy, perhaps because of cultural tendencies to not associate eager mothers with sexuality.

Pregnancy is a time for great sex for some couples and for some it may be a time of concern and fears. Discuss your approach and fears with each other.

Your husband may find your pregnant body more pleasing, whereas you may feel anxious about your baby’s well being. Discuss your differences as friends and reassure your love for each other.

One thing that I would note is that sex and sexuality are very different, and that even if you are not having sexual intercourse, your sexuality can still be expressed.

Most of these changes are predisposed by the couple’s feelings about the pregnancy and its associated changes. You may find that pregnancy complements your sense of sexuality, making you feel more feminine and desirable or, on the other hand, you may feel awkward and unattractive.

Many women have less sexual desire for the duration of the first three and last three months of pregnancy. Early in the pregnancy you may subsist inundated by nausea and vomiting, fatigue and tender breasts while later in the pregnancy your protruding abdomen may make intercourse uncomfortable.

During the second three months of pregnancy, however, you may feel full of energy and have a renewed interest in lovemaking.

Sex during Pregnancy

In the case of a normal pregnancy, it’s wholly safe to have sex until the woman’s water breaks. After than, any sexual intercourse or insertion into the vagina can cause infection.

Now’s the time, more than ever, to stay faithful to your spouse. This not the time to catch an STD, as it could critically harm your baby.

In all likelihood, women may have longer lasting orgasms than when they were not pregnant. Enjoy it while it lasts! This is totally normal.

Some women may experience cramps after an orgasm. This is also usual and not a cause for concern.

Cunnilingus (going down on a woman), is fine, but make sure that no air is blown into the vagina.

Pregnancy and Safe Sex

Partners need to be honest and down-to-earth about sex during pregnancy. Open communication may help to defuse frustration. Because AIDS/HIV infection is transmit through sexual activity, always practice safe sex.

HIV infections can be transmitted to the unborn child. If you have questions about what is safe sex and want to discuss concerns in self-confidence, call 1-800-FOR-AIDS and ask for a health provider.

Safety Precautions

1. Putting the penis into a well-lubricated vagina will not cause any harm to the baby. However, a couple should never put no matter which else such as a vibrator, inside the woman’s vagina while she is pregnant.

2. A man should be thoughtful and tender, moving his penis gently inside the vagina without powerful, deep thrusting.

3. The couple should try more at ease positions for intercourse instead of men-on-top position.

Avoid Sex during Pregnancy

Avoid having sex under any of the following conditions and contact your doctor or health care provider immediately

1.   Vaginal bleeding
2.   Preterm labor
3.   When you or your partner suffering from sexually transmit disease
4.   If you have history of premature birth or labor
5.   Placenta pervia
6.   Broken water
